Journaling as a Mindful Voice Practice

Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is without judgment. Once we are aware of something, we can choose what — if anything — to do about it. If we remain unaware, we have no power to change.

If you've been living with a voice disorder, you may find that you are suddenly more aware of your voice than ever before. You may no longer like the way it sounds or feels or functions. Perhaps you find yourself judging your voice. Consider replacing judgment with curiosity and compassion.

Mindful journaling can be a helpful voice practice for singers or people with voice disorders. Try keeping a voice journal for a week or two. This can be particularly helpful if you're experiencing new symptoms, if you are in voice therapy, or if you’ve recently made changes to your technique or repertoire.

Don't forget to note what goes well. Remember that our minds have a negativity bias. Negative events tend to have a greater effect on our psychological state than positive ones. We remember the bad and gloss over the good. If you have a good voice day, write about it!
